The Plan

Adelaide’s new creation and innovation neighbourhood

In the heart of one of the world’s most liveable cities, the former Royal Adelaide Hospital site presents a once-in-a-century opportunity to create a new future for South Australian’s. The site will be transformed into a creation and innovation neighbourhood that will create high-value jobs and industries securing the future for generations of South Australians to come and positioning Adelaide as the start-up capital of Australia.

When fully established in the next five years, more than 5,000 people will work and stay within the site, creating a centre of gravity for the Adelaide start-up community. It will become the ideal environment for entrepreneurs to partner with industry, researchers, mentors and investors to help grow their start-up or existing businesses.

While the site’s master plan is still evolving, the state government has committed to following elements:

  • an Innovation, Incubator, Start-up and Growth Hub (Start-up Hub) fronting North Terrace

  • integration with the Adelaide Botanic Garden, the East End and adjacent universities

  • significant adaptive re-use of heritage buildings located onsite as well as construction of new commercial buildings to accommodate industries of the future

  • Australian National Aboriginal Art and Culture Gallery, as well as a contemporary art space

  • an International Centre for Tourism, Hospitality and Food Studies;

  • short-stay temporary accommodation.

Demolition and redevelopment of the former Royal Adelaide Hospital site began in November 2017.

Join our neighbourhood

Our Vision is for a vibrant new neighbourhood allowing for leading-edge anchor institutions and companies to connect with business start-ups, incubators and accelerators to launch their ideas and inventions across global markets.

We are in the process of planning the best ways to activate the following buildings to continue bringing people into the neighbourhood.

  • Small tenancy opportunities are on offer to creatives, small businesses and start-ups in the Bice Building.

  • The Eleanor Harrald Building has a 200-seat lecture theatre with additional training rooms that are available to rent for business, entrepreneurs, conferences and training seminars.

  • Built in 1911, the Margaret Graham Building served as the former nurses living quarters, but is also available for adaptive reuse opportunities.

  • To discuss joining the growing group of entrepreneurs relocating to the neighbourhood, please contact us.

    We are always interested to talking to people with ideas for pop-up and temporary activations and ideas. If this is you please email the Place Team or call (08) 8207 1300.
